Modern Slavery is a hidden crime affecting people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, including locals and foreigners. It can take many forms, such as sexual exploitation, forced labour, and domestic servitude. Victims of modern slavery forcefully work in brothels, cannabis farms, nail bars, car washes, agriculture, and even within people's homes.

This problem is a global issue that's happening right now, even in our neighbourhoods. Slavery is more than just a thing of the past; it's a harsh reality that persists.

How To Avoid & Prevent Modern Slavery

Human trafficking is often involved in modern slavery, where victims are moved across borders, towns, or even within the same building. Even if a victim seemingly agrees to be moved, trafficking might still occur. Unfortunately, many people misunderstand modern slavery and confuse it with "migrant working" or "illegal immigration."

Below are the signs to recognize Modern Slavery:

  • Victims compelled to work long hours
  • Excessive dependence on employers or third parties
  • Sub-standard living conditions
  • Withheld or reduced wages
  • Restriction of movement and confinement
  • Signs of physical or psychological abuse, like malnourishment or appearing withdrawn
  • No personal possessions or identification documents
  • Fearful, avoiding eye contact, and hesitant to talk to strangers

These signs may not always be obvious, but if you suspect someone is a victim of modern slavery, it's crucial to report your concerns. By raising awareness and understanding this issue, we can work together to prevent and combat modern slavery, ensuring everyone can live free from exploitation.
